Fire Island might get a tiny bit more attention as an East Coast haven for LGBTQ vacationers, but Provincetown, Mass., is an equally iconic destination for queer folks looking for a beach getaway that feels more like a community than a sheltered resort.

Provincetown is also the name of the excellent new album from queer rock duo Man on Man, which is made up of real-life partners Roddy Bottum (Faith No More, Imperial Teen) and Joey Holman (HOLMAN). Not only did the couple record the lion’s share of the record at their part-time house at the beach town, but the album’s themes – which touch on everything from generational gaps to hook-ups to queer cultural appropriation – tie in well to a town that’s as bold, complicated and rewarding as the queer community itself.

From the propulsive, fizzy indie-pop banger “Showgirls” to the synth-kissed romance of “I Feel Good” to the shoegaze swath of “Gloryhole” to the J Mascis-featuring rock odyssey “Hush,” Provincetown covers a lot of stylistic ground. But the duo never loses sight of bright, buoyant hooks that make the LP feel as refreshing as a dip into the foamy waves on a sunny, breezy day.

Given that Man on Man’s second album is titled Provincetown, we decided to ask them about their favorite spots in P-Town, from bed and breakfasts to candy stores to sand dune tours.

So if you’re headed to P-Town, whether it’s your first time or fifth, make a point to bookmark a few of these insider recs — below, in their own words — about the popular LGBTQ destination spot. (But if you’re looking for a married ‘straight’ man hooking up on the DL as they detail in “Take It From Me,” well, you’re on your own.)
