MJ Lenderman has shared a new song, his second for Anti-. It’s titled “Knockin,” and, naturally, its subject is a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin on Heaven’s Door” by the golfer John Daly. Check it out below.

Lenderman recently performed “Knockin” during his set at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. In a statement about the song’s official release, he expanded on how “Knockin” worked its way into his set list:

I was spending a lot of time watching John Daly videos and came across a rendition he does of Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” Daly’s version includes an extra verse about golfing. My “Knockin” became a staple of the MJ Lenderman & The Wind live set and it felt like a good idea to re-record it professionally.

“Knockin” follows the July single “Rudolph,” which Lenderman said was the first song he’d written after releasing Boat Songs last year. He also plays on Wednesday’s Rat Saw God, which arrived on Dead Oceans in April.
