British electronic artist Forest Swords is back with his first songs in five years. “Butterfly Effect” features a previously unheard vocal sample by Neneh Cherry—with whom he previously worked on a 2020 remix of “Kong”—and has a music video directed by Sam Wiehl. The single comes with the B-side “Tar,” also below, via Ninja Tune. Check those both out below.
“The track swirled around as a pure instrumental for a while, a beat I made in the cold factory space in Liverpool I was recording in, some kind of attempt to cope with the psychedelic amounts of pain I was in from a leg injury,” explained Forest Swords. “Neneh’s unreleased archive vocal turned out to be a perfect fit, like they were meant to be together somehow. As a fan that has always idolised her, it’s a true honour and life highlight to have her blessing to use the vocal on this track.”
Forest Swords’ last album, Compassion, came out in 2017. Since then, he has spent his years working as a film composer and sound designer for outlets ranging from the Oslo Ballet to the video game As Dusk Falls.
This fall, Forest Swords will embark on a European tour, his first live shows since the pandemic. The run begins in Hungary on September 2 and lasts until a show in Sweden on December 6. Find his complete tour dates below.
