Al Green is back with a cover of Lou Reed’s 1972 song “Perfect Day.” It’s the soul legend’s first new single in five years. “I loved Lou’s original ‘Perfect Day’ – the song immediately puts you in a good mood,” Green explains. “We wanted to preserve that spirit, while adding our own sauce and style.” Listen to his spin on the classic below.

Although Green shared his cover of “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” back in 2018 for an installment of Amazon Music’s “Produced By” series, it’s been a long time since he released original music of his own. The Reverend’s last album, Lay It Down, came out back in 2008. It was produced by Questlove and features guest vocals by John Legend, Anthony Hamilton, and Corinne Bailey Rae. Lay It Down peaked at No. 9 on Billboard’s Top Album charts and scooped up a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album.
